Instructions for Emailing Senators

Teresa Preston submitted the following advice on effectively emailing Senators in support of Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) recognition:

Dear Walt,

I just finished e-mailing every single Senator on the Rules Committee, as well as the Patron and Co-Patrons of SJR 152. I made each e-mail slightly different (not a form letter) and e-mailed them individually rather than a “copy to”. I kept it brief. In the ones to the Patron and co-patron and the Chair I mentioned my work on the 2007 county committee and the ASV 2007 committee.

Here is an example of the shortest version I sent:

Dear Senator Hanger,

I support passage of Senate Joint Resolution 152 to obtain state recognition for the Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) Indian Tribe of Southampton County Virginia because this tribe has one of the best documentable histories of any tribe in Virginia.  I encourage you to vote for passage of this resolution.

Thank you,

Teresa Bevis Preston
